Fall 2023 South Bay Elementary League Final Tournament Recap!

Beat the Streets Bay Area is happy to announce the successful culmination of our Fall 2023 South Bay Elementary League! As Program Coordinator, I am delighted to showcase our remarkable capstone event, the South Bay Elementary League Final Tournament, attended by our wrestlers, coaches, parents, and staff.

Before our Final Tournament, BTSBA was grateful to receive wrestling shoes, shorts and shirts from BTS National and GearUp, enhancing the gear available to our wrestlers on the mat. Upon receiving the new attire, our teams quickly placed on the new gear, ready to take photos with each other, practicing their moves, and gearing up for the Final Tournament on 11/18. These moments serve as a testament to the camaraderie within BTSBA, motivating us to continue with our mission of exposing Bay Area youth to wrestling.

Below is a photo of our Lakewood Team and Evergreen School District Teams in their gear!

Our Final Tournament showcased the dedication of over 75 wrestlers participating in full matches to highlight their hard work, progress, and resilience throughout our 8-week program. To ensure an authentic tournament experience for the youth, BTSBA had nine referees on hand. Additionally, we were fortunate to have many volunteers, whose time and effort was vital in smoothly conducting the tournament. As the tournament began, drives of parents and family members walked in to show their support for their wrestlers, creating an environment full of energy and excitement.

Our wrestlers engaged in 3, 45-second rounds per match, experiencing their first full wrestling match of the season! As this was a new level of competition, our wrestlers soon became focused on their matches, determined to win first place in their pool. This energy created some amazing matches and teamwork as students cheered on their teammates in the sidelines.

When getting back down to the mat seemed too difficult for our wrestlers, their coaches were there to guide them through- until their very last match. Their words of encouragement further motivated them-giving them an opportunity to learn through experience.

At the end of the tournament, BTSBA announced 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners - giving some final energy for the young wrestlers to continue onward as they waited for their name to be called. This final leg of the tournament brought together all five teams, cheering each other on as they were rewarded for their hard work, dedication, and motivation at the final tournament.

We hope this experience will serve as a catalyst, motivating and inspiring our young athletes to continue their journey in the world of athletics and wrestling in the South Bay. As a result, we are determined to continue raising funds, support, and donors to our cause to continually provide capstone events such as our Final Tournament.

BTSBA would like to express gratitude to everyone who made this Fall 2023 season possible, including volunteers, parents, supporters, special guests, and our extremely valued coaches. We hope to see you in 2024!

"Being part of your program is such a gift for me and our students and families. I love attending the duals and watching practice at K. Smith." - Cesar Gaytan, Principal at K. Smith Elementary School.

A Night to Remember: Return to the Mat

As the operational coordinator for the recent event, Return to the Mat,  I am overjoyed to share with you the incredible moments and highlights from this unforgettable evening. On a night filled with inspiration, legends, and fierce competition, over 100 wrestlers signed up to participate in an event that showcased the essence of wrestling and its enduring spirit. With Travis Lee leading a clinic and legends like Olympian Robby Smith in attendance, this event was a true celebration of the wrestling community.

October 21st, Return to the Mat Participants

The evening of Return to the Mat didn't just start; it kicked off with a roar.

Travis Lee, a renowned figure in the wrestling world, conducted an inspiring clinic for all wrestlers in attendance. Travis shared his journey, emphasizing the values of hard work, determination, and perseverance. His insights into wrestling techniques and mental fortitude left everyone in awe. It was an incredible opportunity for young wrestlers and elite wrestlers to learn from one of the best in the sport, and his passion for wrestling was truly contagious.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Return to the Mat was the presence of wrestling legends, including Robby Smith, an Olympian and bronze medalist. Robby not only graced the event with his presence but also served as the charismatic emcee for the evening. His energy and enthusiasm kept the audience engaged throughout the night. Having an Olympian in the building added a touch of prestige and excitement to the event, making it even more special for both the participants and the spectators.

Return to the Mat introduced a unique competition that had everyone on the edge of their seats – the "Throw Contest." In this exciting contest, high school wrestlers competed to showcase their skills in executing the perfect throw. The atmosphere was electric as these young athletes displayed their talent and determination. It was amazing to have 3 other Bay Area legends on the judge panel; John Lange, Steve Gee, and Jacob Macalolooy.

10’s All Around From the Judges

The Winners of the "Throw Contest" were celebrated with great enthusiasm. The top three high school wrestlers received not only recognition but also valuable prizes that will undoubtedly motivate them to continue pursuing their wrestling dreams. A special thank you to another legend Jordan Burroughs for donating a singlet signed by none other than himself and Rudis for sponsoring the event with gift cards for the 2nd & 3rd placers. It was amazing to witness the gratitude from the top 3 contenders.

1st Place Winner, Jayden Gasol

Return to the Mat was a night that brought the wrestling community together in a spirit of camaraderie and competition. Travis Lee's clinic, the presence of wrestling legend Robby Smith, and the thrilling "Throw Contest" made it a memorable and inspiring event for everyone involved. It showcased the dedication, talent, and passion of wrestlers from all walks of life.

We look forward to more such events in the future, where wrestling enthusiasts can come together to celebrate the sport they love.

2023 BTSBA Staff & Board Members

Thank you to all the participants, spectators, and supporters who made "Return to the Mat" a resounding success.
