A Night to Remember: Return to the Mat
As the operational coordinator for the recent event, Return to the Mat, I am overjoyed to share with you the incredible moments and highlights from this unforgettable evening. On a night filled with inspiration, legends, and fierce competition, over 100 wrestlers signed up to participate in an event that showcased the essence of wrestling and its enduring spirit. With Travis Lee leading a clinic and legends like Olympian Robby Smith in attendance, this event was a true celebration of the wrestling community.
October 21st, Return to the Mat Participants
The evening of Return to the Mat didn't just start; it kicked off with a roar.
Travis Lee, a renowned figure in the wrestling world, conducted an inspiring clinic for all wrestlers in attendance. Travis shared his journey, emphasizing the values of hard work, determination, and perseverance. His insights into wrestling techniques and mental fortitude left everyone in awe. It was an incredible opportunity for young wrestlers and elite wrestlers to learn from one of the best in the sport, and his passion for wrestling was truly contagious.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Return to the Mat was the presence of wrestling legends, including Robby Smith, an Olympian and bronze medalist. Robby not only graced the event with his presence but also served as the charismatic emcee for the evening. His energy and enthusiasm kept the audience engaged throughout the night. Having an Olympian in the building added a touch of prestige and excitement to the event, making it even more special for both the participants and the spectators.
Return to the Mat introduced a unique competition that had everyone on the edge of their seats – the "Throw Contest." In this exciting contest, high school wrestlers competed to showcase their skills in executing the perfect throw. The atmosphere was electric as these young athletes displayed their talent and determination. It was amazing to have 3 other Bay Area legends on the judge panel; John Lange, Steve Gee, and Jacob Macalolooy.
10’s All Around From the Judges
The Winners of the "Throw Contest" were celebrated with great enthusiasm. The top three high school wrestlers received not only recognition but also valuable prizes that will undoubtedly motivate them to continue pursuing their wrestling dreams. A special thank you to another legend Jordan Burroughs for donating a singlet signed by none other than himself and Rudis for sponsoring the event with gift cards for the 2nd & 3rd placers. It was amazing to witness the gratitude from the top 3 contenders.
1st Place Winner, Jayden Gasol
Return to the Mat was a night that brought the wrestling community together in a spirit of camaraderie and competition. Travis Lee's clinic, the presence of wrestling legend Robby Smith, and the thrilling "Throw Contest" made it a memorable and inspiring event for everyone involved. It showcased the dedication, talent, and passion of wrestlers from all walks of life.
We look forward to more such events in the future, where wrestling enthusiasts can come together to celebrate the sport they love.
